iCivics National Teachers Council Conference
iCivics welcomes our Teachers Council members to Washington, DC July 15th to July 17th 2014. The purpose of this mini conference? Train our new council on a new mission centered around service. “Our goal is to have an action plan for serving teachers this fall”, says Erin Braun, Outreach Director. With the overall shift from recruitment to service, the Teachers Council of twenty has a big job of effectively supporting the iCivics user base of 40,000 active teachers.
During my time in D.C. the council met in the Supreme Court with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor for dinner the first night. The rest of the time was spent as a council working to determine the best ways to network with the teachers using iCivics in their classroom and work together to improve civic engagement in our country. |
NCSS Summer Leadership Institute
From July 8th to July 10th 2014, I attended the NCSS Summer Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. representing the Wisconsin Council for Social Studies. The purpose of the SLI according to NCSS is:
"We would ask that affiliate councils select two up-and-coming council leaders interested in advocating for their profession and enriching their leadership skills. The Institute will dedicate time to Resolution writing to inform the governance of NCSS, time "on the hill" to meet members of Congress to advocate for social studies education, and best of all, an amazing opportunity to meet with NCSS lobbyist Catriona Macdonald to strengthen civic action skills for impacting education policy at local, state and national levels." During my three days in Washington, D.C. I met with state council leaders from around the country, attended workshops by social studies consultants and met with numerous members of Congress that represent Wisconsin. |
DPI Social Studies BootcampJune 24th-25th, 2014, I was asked to participate in the DPI Summer Social Studies Bootcamp as one of the two master teachers to work with and organize other teachers that were attending the workshop. The workshop focused on Discipline Literacy and SLO writing and had different presentations that allowed teachers to get a better understanding of each of these ideas. Once presentations were completed, teachers were given the time and resources to start developing their SLOs and how to connect them to CCSS literacy components.

In the fall of 2013, I was selected as one of twenty-three teachers in the country to represent a National Teachers Council of iCivics. iCivics is a non-profit organization dedicated to reinvigorating civic learning through interactive and engaging learning resources. Founded and led by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, iCivics provides students with the tools they need for active participation and democratic action and teachers with the materials to support them.
This summer I will spend five days in Washington D.C. working with Justice O'Connor and the iCivics team to provide outreach to educators around the country. For more information check out www.icivics.org

During the fall of 2013, I was selected as one of five teachers in the state of Wisconsin as part of the Fellowship Program through CSAC at UW-Madison. This honor has given me the privilege of not only working on the UW-Madison campus, but also working with some of the best U.S. Constitution research minds in the country.
